Want to go on vacation but can’t afford it?  How about going on a day trip?  If you live in the Midwest, Taylors Falls is a great (and cheap) option.

Located right on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, Taylors Falls is an hour drive from the Twin Cities.  It’s also one of the most beautiful places in Minnesota (in my opinion, Duluth is the only place that tops it).

Taylors Falls in the closest you’ll find to mountains in MN.  It’s hilly, full of pretty rock formations, and the colors look gorgeous in autumn.

With a population of only 1,000 people, Taylors Falls is a beautiful small town that makes for the perfect day trip getaway on a budget.  Here are three affordable things to do in Taylors Falls.

Interstate State Park

The views at this state park are absolutely stunning.  You can walk, hike, and even go rock climbing (you do need to get permission to climb).  The park itself is free; however, there is a cost for parking.  If you don’t want to pay the fee, just park in the nearby downtown area and walk over to the park.

If you’re willing to spend some money, check out the scenic boat tours on the St. Croix River.

Franconia Sculpture Park

Although this sculpture park is not technically in Taylors Falls, it’s located just 10 minutes away in Shafer, MN.  This 43 acre park features over 100 sculptures.  You could spend an entire day here!  It’s free, dog-friendly, and open to the public 24/7.

When my hubby and I were there, we saw an artist using a saw to create a new sculpture.  Pretty neat!

Downtown

Taylors Falls has a small downtown area that includes a few restaurants and shops.  The Juneberry Café and The Vegetarian (located in nearby St. Croix Falls, WI) both have great reviews online (unfortunately, we went to Taylors Falls on a Sunday and they were both closed).

A Frugal Day Trip to Taylors Falls

If you live in the area and are looking for a cheap day trip idea, check out Taylors Falls!  The river, rock formations, hills, and fall colors are gorgeous.  If you spend the day at Interstate State Park and Franconia Sculpture Park, you won’t have to spend a dime on anything other than gas.
