Autumn is finally here and that means it’s time to pull out your scarves, play in color-changing leaves, and bust out those boots you have been missing all summer. It also means that now is the perfect time to switch up your beauty routine to fall more in line with the windier days and cooler nights.

It is no secret that the autumn season tends to impact our complexions and hair in unexpected ways, but a lot of us just grit our teeth and bear the everyday struggles that come with having drier skin, acne outbreaks and faded hair color. You don’t have to just deal with it though, as there are plenty of things you can do that will help combat the impact of autumn.

Freshen Up

Autumn is a great time to go for a full body pamper session. After all, you should really start the new season with a clean slate, right? Consider splurging a little and going for a full facial; take advantage of the professional at your fingertips by asking any and every question you might have about your skin and what it may need in the coming months.

Maybe you have dry patches along your jaw or an oily t-zone. Maybe you tend to break out during that time of the month. Whatever your issue, we are willing to bet that the pro will have some seriously detailed tips for you.

Get Informed

Maybe that talk with the pro at the salon got you inspired to really look into your skincare routine to see if you are really doing what is best for your complexion. Should you be using face masks more often? What foods make you break out? Does rubbing alcohol help clear acne?

There are countless tips out there from people who may or may not know what they are talking about, and it can be a little overwhelming to wade through all of the advice. So, take your time and find the right information for your face.

Update Your Look

The summer months are all about being shiny and colorful, with playful bright colors and sparkly eyeliner, but autumn is all about keeping things dark and moody. That’s right, if you have been wanting to experiment with dark purple lipstick, now is definitely the time.

Go for matte lipsticks, gorgeous bronzers, dark reds and plums, and darker eyeshadows. Of course you can still wear those summer colors if you truly love them, but maybe go for matte versions to fall more in line with…well, fall!

Give Your Hair Some TLC

For the most part, unlike your skin, your hair does pretty well during the summer months. It gets a beautiful sun-kissed glow and gets to air-dry while you play in the sand at the beach. Autumn and winter are another story.

With cooler days and nights, you are more likely to blow dry your hair and then whip out other hot tools, like curling irons, which means that your hair is a lot more likely to get damaged and dry a whole lot faster. Try out some leave-in hair lotions if you find that dryness is becoming an issue, and try to limit the hot tools to only a couple times a week.

Autumn is also the perfect time to try a new hair color or style if you are the adventurous type. Go a little darker with your color or try a bold blunt cut or a soft lob—branch out!

Don’t Forget Those Lips

Oftentimes, we forget about one of the most important parts of our face—our lips! Usually, skin and beauty routines focus on our overall skin, whether it be our faces or bodies, but tend to forget the lips. Well, they need love too. Especially during the colder autumn months that can make them dry and chapped.

Get a good sugar-based lip exfoliate (or just make your own) and make sure to gently exfoliate them a few times a week at the end of the day. Follow it up with a really good hydrating lip balm (or even some Vaseline) and head to bed.
